about

This album is the result of a two-year collaboration between Kees de Groot and Martin Hensel that grew out of their mutual interest in repetition in music and techniques employed in dUbstep production. While each artist has a distinct personal style in their own musical endeavors—Hensel’s tradition is from 90s techno club scenes and de Groot pulls from 60s and 70s jazz fusion and prog rock traditions—there is something uniquely new in how they blended their affinities. Their interests clearly intersect in the use of sampled sounds and field recordings—a glass on a ceramic plate, a mechanical loom, a rocking chair, a clasp from a drawer, announcements over an intercom—which are used in many of the included tracks to create rhythmic foundations, bass lines, as well as melodic elements.

The majority of the tracks are created with a template (Pearl Bay) created by Hensel in the Bitwig DAW. Their chosen challenge was to limit their work to this environment to give the album its coherence. They did not completely succeed in this because several of the tracks were started in Ableton Live before they made the switch to Bitwig.

In addition to this album Hensel has created a companion 40-minute collage, dUbble Up, using the stems of all of the tracks of this album, which is offered as a free bonus to the album.
